Garage doors are designed with different materials and they all have their advantages and shortcomings. Below are some of the most common materials used and how they compare to each other.

Steel

This is arguably the most common of all types.  They are popular for a good reason. Apart from their durability, they are also easy to maintain and are reasonably priced. These doors come in different sizes, shapes, and styles. Most steel doors are perfect gadgets for reducing noise and saving energy. Some garage doors are made with steel panel that vary in sizes and thickness. The low cost ones have thin panels of 28-gauge while the middle level ones have 25 or 25-gauge. But most non-residential steel garage doors use thicker frame both on the inside and on the outside.

Aluminum

Aluminum doors share similar characteristics with steel doors with long lasting finishes and optional faux wood texturing. They are less expensive than steel and equally lighter than steel.

Wood

Most old garage doors are made of wood, and it is still in use by those who prefer traditional materials and styles. They come in a wide range of styles and colors. The cheapest types have flat hardboard panels while the stain-grade types are usually more expensive but are more appealing than its hardboard counterpart. Most wooden types are manually operated and they are becoming less popular with the increased use of the automatic steel doors.

Glass garage doors

These are not very popular like the steel door but can provide more resistance to dents than other types of door materials. They are more resistant to salt water corrosion, although they are poor insulators and light.  For residential buildings in coastal locations, glass doors would be the most ideal choice.
